What's New

The Board Welcomes a New Member 

January 10, 2025

The Copyright Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniela Bassan as a part-time Member of the Board, effective December 17, 2024. Daniela will serve a three-year term in this role. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Bassan and look forward to her valuable contributions to the Board's work in the years ahead.

New and Updated Practice Notices

December 18, 2024

The Copyright Board has published the Practice Notice on Confidential Information (PN 2024-013). This new practice notice outlines the purpose and function of confidentiality orders. It also sets out the procedure for requesting a confidentiality order. 

Additionally, the Practice Notice on Format of Electronic Documents (PN 2019-001) has been updated under the title Practice Notice on Filing of Documents (PN 2019-001)(rev. 2). This version provides new and updated information about the filing of electronic and paper documents with the Board. It also sets out new formatting requirements for all documents filed with the Board which aim to improve their accessibility.

The following practice notices have also been updated in light of the changes made to PN 2019-001:

•    Practice Notice on Filing a Proposed Tariff (PN-2019-004)(rev. 5)

•    Practice Notice on Filing a Notice of Grounds for Proposed Tariff (PN-2022-006)(rev. 3)

•    Practice Notice on Filing a Notice of Grounds for Objection (PN-2022-007)(rev. 3)

In keeping with best practices regarding accessibility, all practices notices have been reformatted and are now published on Decisia. They are still accessible on the Tools section of the website. 

Proposed Tariffs for the Years 2026 and Beyond

December 17, 2024

On November 15, 2024, the Copyright Board published all proposed tariffs filed in 2024, along with a Notice from the Secretary General.

The period to file an objection to the proposed tariffs is now closed. All Notice of Grounds for objections filed with the Board will be sent to the collective societies and published on the Board's website in the new year. 

By February 15, 2025, at the latest, the Board will notify collective societies and objectors if it will hold a hearing in respect of the proposed tariffs.

2023-2024 Annual Report

The Copyright Board of Canada has published its 2023-2024 Annual Report. The report provides an overview of the Board’s activities, and its tabling to Parliament is a requirement under section 66.9 of the Copyright Act.

User Guide: Tariff Approval Processes

The Copyright Board is pleased to announce the launch of its User Guide on tariff approval processes, developed in collaboration with the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ). We would like to thank the CIAJ for its support in creating this guide, which outlines the life cycle of a tariff. For more information, click here.

Update on Information Management Initiatives and Consultation

October 2024

The Board has recently communicated its intent to update its information management practices. As part of this initiative, a consultation was conducted regarding the plan to revise the status of historical commercial information that was previously classified as sensitive, confidential, or highly confidential. Further details about the consultation and the associated information management initiatives are available here. The Board has received several comments from stakeholders, which are currently under review. We will provide further updates in the coming months. The Board thanks all stakeholders for their continued engagement.
